Houston man kills intruder, frightens off accomplice

 “A man fought back against two intruders, fatally shooting one of them at his north Harris County apartment, according to deputies…. [The] man, who lives in a third floor apartment, says he was asleep when he heard something at the front door and went to investigate. He told sheriff’s deputies at least two men then forced their way inside the apartment. He then confronted the two suspects and fired his weapon several times. One of the suspects died at the scene. The other fled the scene….”

Unbroken

The poet Robert Burns could have been predicting the plight of American prisoners of war in Japan when he penned the famous words “Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn!” [ref]

And one POW who could take the stand as a leading witness for the prosecution in the case of man (Allied POWs) vs. man (Japanese prison guards)  is Louis Zamperini, former Olympian and U.S. Air Corps bombardier.

Zamperini was on the verge of becoming the first man to break the four minute mile, and looking forward to the 1940 Olympics, when World War II dashed his dreams. He ended up in the Army Air Corps, stationed in the Pacific. He and two crewmates were lost at sea when their B-24 crashed during a search and rescue mission.

Detroit homeowner shoots & kills one of two intruders

Reported By Fox News on 2014-03-06 — “Thursday afternoon a Detroit homeowner fatally shot an intruder. A second intruder was also at the scene but ran away and is still being sought by police. Police say the homeowner heard glass break around 12:30 p.m., ran to the back of his house and saw a person climbing in the window, so he grabbed his gun and fired. Police say the 17-year-old suspect then collapsed on the driveway, appearing to have died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The other suspect is in his 20s….’It’s a message to the criminals – stop coming in to people’s homes unannounced and uninvited. Crime no longer pays in the city of Detroit,’ says Dep. Chief Rodney Johnson of the Detroit Police Department….”

Son with a gun subdues intruder and saves elderly mom

“A man accused of trying to rob an elderly Seymour woman, only to have the victim’s son hold a gun to his head, has been charged. Kenny Guffey said he was driving home from work around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday when he called is 83-year-old mother, Christine Guffey. ‘We were talking probably ten minutes and then all of the sudden her voice panicked and she said, ‘What are you doing in my house, oh no, he’s got a knife. What are you doing with the knife?” said Guffey. Luckily, Guffey was only two minutes away from her Balsam Road home. When he got there, he went inside with his gun drawn…. Guffey said the intruder used the shovel to knock his gun out of his hand. He said he then tackled the man and got his gun back while his mother called 911….”

Great Lakes ice coverage second greatest recorded

“Got ice? The Great Lakes certainly do, with ice coverage at its highest percentage in 35 years, according to scientists from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Mich…. As of Wednesday morning, 91% of the Great Lakes were ice-covered, which is the second-highest level since records began, according to the laboratory. The previous second place record was in 1994, at 90.7%. The record of almost 95% was set in February 1979….”

Mom holds man at gunpoint who had sex with underage daughter

“A Fort Mill [South Carolina] mom … caught her 15-year-old daughter having sex with a [23-year-old] man who … claimed to be a teenager. The mother held him at gunpoint until Sheriff’s Deputies arrived. Around 3:30 Sunday morning, she noticed an unfamiliar car in her driveway…. She says she sent her oldest daughter to check the home and when she did, she found Addison Pittman in one of her bathrooms. The mother quickly grabbed a BB gun…. She held up Pittman until Sheriff Deputies arrived. At first, the mother thought Pittman was a burglar until her 15-year-old daughter revealed she invited the man over to have sex….”
